INTRODUCTION

Year-round sunny weather and magnificent white sand beaches make the Dominican Republic, the second largest island in the Caribbean, the favorite destination for Quebecers.

Driving down the southern coast of the island, you reach La Romana, with its expansive sugar plantations. But one of the main attractions is the artists’ village, «Altos de Chavon», the reproduction of an XVIIth century Italian village. Among some of the sites to visit are the boutiques, artists’ workshops, theater, archeological museum, church and university. At the end of the day, try one of the gourmet restaurants or bars.

Described by The Wall Street Journal as the « Oscars » of tourism, these awards were granted in each category according to thousands of tourism professionals, of 183,000 businesses and coming from 160 countries. The World Travel Awards were launched in 1993 and aim at recognize excellence in world-wide tourism.
