Also known as the Amber Coast and situated on the north coast of the island, Puerto Plata lies at the base of Mont Isabel de Torres. You can hike up or take the sky lift to the summit 800 meters in altitude. With its pastel colored Victorian homes and turn of the century buildings, this charming city evokes romance.
If you are a history buff, a visit to the museum at Fort San Filipe, built by the Spanish in the XVIth century, is recommended. Tourist-oriented, take a leisurely stroll down the Malecon, an animated seaside boulevard, do some shopping, dine at one of the restaurants, and have a nightcap at a night club or bar.
