When the forecast calls for abundant snowfall in the south of the Belle Province, I just want to throw my skis on and head straight for Sutton. After mounds of snow have accumulated, this backcountry paradise is transformed into one of the most delightful carving playgrounds. That being said, even if Sutton is recognized for the variety and quantity of its glades— and all the fun skiers have tearing them up—there is so much more to this amazing resort: its meandering runs of varying widths, weaving through perfectly spaced trees, are perfect for letting loose in fresh powder.
It is often said that Sutton is skiing at its absolute purest. Indeed, one of the particularly great things about Sutton is the fact that runs are not systematically groomed. Mogul hounds, and those who love their terrain a little rugged and irregular— not to mention the intense focus it requires—will be well served on this mountain. The glades at Sutton are also as pure and raw as it gets. Of course, there is also plenty for those who prefer to carve wide, groomed slopes, as the maintenance crew works tirelessly to keep several of the main runs impeccable.
In keeping with its pure, natural side, Sutton also has a traditionally welcoming feel. Both the staff and the mountain’s regulars have managed to maintain the warm and friendly quality of the resort over the years. A typical day might go a little something like this: several exciting runs, complete with a warm greeting from the lift workers with every ride up, a stop at the top for a cup of hot chocolate or midday lunch with friends, tons more amazing descents and, once the lifts close for the day, some après-ski fun at Le Tucker with a cool band, friends and a couple of drinks.
Feel free to add an extra hot chocolate here and there, as needed. And the best part of it all is that you can start over again the next day!
