During the Second World War, to support its troops in the conquest of the British Raj, the Japanese Empire launched the ambitious project of building a 415-kilometer railroad through Thailand to British Burma. The workforce, made up of 100,000 Asian workers and 30,000 Western prisoners of war, suffered heavy losses due to mistreatment, tropical diseases and American and British bombing raids.

Day 7
Chiang Mai

Welcome to Chiang Mai, in the heart of the ancient Lanna kingdom. From this day on, all travel is by songthaew, a local shared cab, which we privatize for the group. You’ll get around just like the locals.

6 am | Sunrise viewing of the offering ceremony: a long procession of monks, preceded by the eldest, makes its way through town.

7 am | Breakfast at the hotel.

3 pm | Departure for the summit of Mount Doï Suthep, overlooking Chiang Mai to the east, where you’ll find a temple that is still very popular and venerated by Buddhists. The view of the “Rose of the North”, as Chiang Mai is known, is breathtaking. Tasting of the national drink: Samg Som.

7:30 pm | Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Day 8
Chiang Mai

6:30 am | Breakfast at hotel.

8:30 am | Visit to the Kad Luang market, renowned for its diversity of colors and scents. Thais frequent this large market in search of the best products. Competition is fierce between vendors, and the most beautiful stalls win the day. The best producers of homemade sausages and grilled pork rinds are immediately recognizable by the many buyers patiently waiting their turn. A very interesting area is dedicated to the ethnic crafts of the northern tribes.

10:30 am | Departure for the outskirts of Chiang Mai, where Mr. Praphat welcomes us to his traditional Lanna-style house, more than a century old, a veritable living museum where his father, grandfather and great-grandfather already lived. A return to the past, amidst fruit trees, medicinal plants and herbs.

12 h | Help prepare dinner under the expert guidance of the whole family.

2 pm | Drive to Mae Jo University to discover an orchid nursery, a far cry from the tourist orchid farms. These orchids are produced by Chiang Mai Agricultural University and then reintroduced into the northern forests.
